Mike transformed himself from one of the most competetive surfers of the 1980s into a pioneering big wave surfer in the new millennium. Mike and his partner Brad Gerlach won the Billabong XXL Big Wave Award in 2001 after catching a 66-foot-break off the coast of San Diego at the Cortez Bank. Then returning the favor in 2006, Mike towed Brad into the XXL winning 68 foot wave in Mexico. Mike is also an ASP contest director, and still an avid (and ripping) freesurfer.
